Creating a new Twitter account is the first step to having an effective Twitter campaign using iScream Social.
1. Select a Twitter handle
The first step is to choose a username, or as it’s more commonly known a Twitter handle. Remember this isn’t a personal account, but rather an account that represents your business. So an obvious choice would be to use your business name. The important thing to remember is to choose a name that quickly represents who you are and what you plan on tweeting about. You may really love your dogs. But if dogs have nothing to do with your business, than @puglover74 won’t be a very effective handle for your business.
2. Write an effective Twitter bio
Don’t underestimate the importance of writing an effective Twitter bio. Your bio is a Twitter users first glimpse at your business and what they should expect by following you. When writing your Twitter bio think of it as a 160 character sales piece about your business.
Another important aspect of writing an effective Twitter bio is incorporating keywords. Potential followers can find you by searching inside of Twitter. Placing effective keywords in your bio will make it easy for them to find you. For example, if you plan on promoting your bakery on Twitter make sure to include keywords in your bio that are bakery-related. Also, remember to use location keywords if you are targeting locally or regionally.
3. Select a profile image
The next step in setting up a Twitter account is choosing a profile image. Remember that this is a business account. A good first choice would be your company’s logo or product.
4. Start following other Twitter users
Twitter has a great feature for new users that allows you to follow clients and friends by uploading your email contact list. Once you start following someone, you will see all of their posts in your feed. The key to using Twitter effectively is to follow relevant users and provide content so users will follow you back. A good rule of thumb is to follow users who have decided to follow you. The more people that follow you the more effective your social media campaign will be.
5. Utilize hashtags
If you’re not familiar with the term hashtag, you have undoubtedly seen them around. Hashtags are a trending keyword or phrase that begins with #. Hashtags allow group of tweets to be aggregated around a common keyword or phrase. For example, if you add #cupcakes to a tweet. Than all the tweets on Twitter that contain #cupcakes will be group together to allow users to view posts based on that theme. This is a really valuable tool that allows your tweets to be seen by a larger audience than just the people following you. If you know a hashtag that is commonly used in your industry, try incorporating it into your tweets.
Hashtags are commonly used for current events and news. Many conferences and even TV shows will promote their own hashtag, so everyone tweeting at the event can view the tweets everybody else is writing.
6. Customize your profile
The last step to setting up your account is designing your profile page. Twitter allows for a variety of options in terms of customization. Just click on the gear icon on the upper right hand corner. Once you are in the account setting page click “design” on the left hand side of the screen. Twitter allows you to select a background image, a background color, and the color of the links on your page. You can select one of the background images Twitter supplies or you can create a custom background image. If you close to create a custom background image and are familiar with Photoshop, try using this great template to get started.
