Youtube–and video marketing in general–has become a popular channel for social media for business marketing. In 2011, Youtube had 490 million unique visitors and generated 92 billion page views per month–and that’s not including videos embedded on other websites. So are you ready to get your business active on Youtube? If so, read on to get the basics!
What you’ll need:
- Google ID (Bonus points if you use the same Gmail address for your Google+ profile as well)
- Videos to get started (this can be short commercials, event videos, or just about any video content you have)
Creating an account is straightforward; just go to Youtube, sign in with your Google ID (Gmail account) and you’re ready to start! Alternatively, you can click the red “Create an Account” button in the upper right corner to create a new account.
With your account set up, it’s now time to build out your account and optimize it with your desired SEO-approved keywords. To access your account, click your email and profile picture in the upper right corner. This will bring down a horizontal menu, including options like Favorites, Watch Later, My Channel, Video Manager and more.
A few of particular importance are:
My Channel. When you first click My Channel, you’ll be prompted to to select a username and identify your country and gender. If your desired username is taken, you’ll get a list of other options. Next you’ll be prompted to set your privacy settings.
Within My Channel, you’ll also have access to your Analytics Manager and Video Feed. Once you upload videos, you’ll be able to explore metrics like Views, Favorites and more. Your Video Feed will give you prompts to upload videos, create playlists, create webcam videos, or create animations or slideshows.
By clicking the Channel Settings, you can update your profile picture (avatar), background, account title and bio. As you fill out your profile, make sure to incorporate keywords.
- Video Manager. The Video Manager will serve as your uploads dashboard. You can view and edit previously uploaded videos or upload new ones.
Settings. Any changes to your accounts, such as your email or password, can be made here. You can also update sharing and privacy settings here.
This section also hosts the Monetization settings. This portion will allow you to turn on AdSense ads, and you’ll be able to earn revenue when ads are clicked.
When you’re ready to upload videos, click the Upload link in the top navigation. To upload, click the large red button and select your file.
Once it is uploaded, you’ll have the option to add a title, a description and tags. These areas are important to fill in because they are searchable. Make sure to remember keywords!
Once you’ve posted some videos to your playlists, don’t forget to share them across your other social channels.
